TITANIUM FLUID :WHAT IS IT ?

Both Castrol Edge and Kendall had advertised the efficacy of their titanium fluid; Castrol is more prominent of them. The fluid titanium had been advertised as the ultimate compound in the engine friction reduction, which can unlock the engine’s true potential. Parallel to these, both engine oil brands with their titanium fluid had received some good reviews in the automobile community from the reviewers to the sports car user and the normal user. Even though the price for both engine oil is higher as they had been the respective company’s signature products, many car lovers do not hesitate to pay a high amount for these engine oil.

Let us look into what titanium fluid is all about and what is the fuzz about it? In the first place, what is titanium? Titanium is an element that occurs within a number of mineral deposits, principally rutile and ilmenite, which are widely distributed in the Earth’s crust and lithosphere; it is found in almost all living things and bodies of water, rocks, and soils. The metal is extracted from its principal mineral ores by the Kroll and Hunter processes. This mineral was named titanium by the German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth after the Titan from the Greek Mythology. German chemist had called the name titanium; however, the man who had discovered the titanium mineral was William Cregor, a British mineralogist in 1791.

It had been nearly two centuries since the mineral was discovered and named. It has been comprehensively used in every sector possible, ranging from the military, aerospace, industrial process, medical, sporting goods, jewellery, dental, etc. Titanium is useful in most industries as it can be alloyed with iron, aluminium, and other elements to produce a strong but lightweight alloy. Due to these capabilities, titanium is very prominent in every working sector. Titanium also has another superiority as it is corrosion-resistant.

While it had been supreme in many sectors, only in the recent year that researchers had found that titanium added to a formulated engine oil can provide a higher level of wear resistance. The metal-to-metal friction in the car engine could be detrimental to the car overall if no necessary precautions were taken. The results from the research were fascinating as they can change the way engine oil fight against metal to metal friction. Why had titanium been efficient in fighting the engine metal to metal friction? The research had found that when titanium is added to a formulated engine oil, it can create a nanoscale layer in the unprotected engine parts.

With these discoveries, one of the prominent engine oil makers, Castrol, decided that adding the titanium additive to their engine oil was the best way to fight engine friction. It had been said that Castrol had decided to add the titanium additive in the engine oil after nearly 2500 hits and misses in creating a superior friction reduction lubricant. After a successful test in the normal drive and on the track, Castrol finally released their titanium fluid engine oil called Castrol Edge in 2019. Together with titanium, they added a proprietary additive that will double the oil strength against oil breakdown.

The titanium additive with the doubling of the oil strength made Castrol advertise their engine as superior in fighting against metal to metal friction while simultaneously unlocking the engine’s true performance. With the success of Castrol, some non-prominent engine oil like Kendall, Texas, and ConocoPhillips had made their engine oil with titanium additive. Nonetheless, Castrol is the first engine oil that has prominent success with the titanium additive since it is more famous than them.

With the superiority of titanium in engine oil having been proven and made successful by Castrol, it paved for more research on the benefits of titanium in the automotive industries. With the advancement in turbo technologies and saving space, the car engine has become smaller while conversely generating more power thanks to turbo technologies. This made the car engine work hard, and the titanium was seen as the latest innovation in the lubricant company’s fight against the metal to metal friction in the car engine.

Astoundingly, since the discovery of the titanium in 1791 and after nearly two centuries, only in the recent years that titanium been proven its efficacy in hindering the engine metal to metal friction. This will pave more innovation using titanium in the car lubrication industries. Even in the electric car industry, which can be in infancy compared to ICE, the titanium fluid had been proposed to enhance the greases’ lifespan and reduce the friction torque. The unique electric car lubricant had paved the way for the proposed use of titanium-based fluid in those industries.

Titanium may well be more prominent in the future with other engine oil companies. Maybe more engine oil companies will also use the titanium fluid in the engine oil. The titanium fluid has been a significant breakthrough in the lubricant industries to enhance the lubrication friction against the omnipresent engine metal to metal friction.
