Henry Ford the founder of Ford Motors

We had looked in these blogs on the how the car manufacturer names their car models. The continental car like BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi, and Volvo will use the number or character to name their cars like BMW 3 Series, Mercedes Benz S Class, Volvo XC60 and Audi A4. For each car body type, the character used will be different for example BMW and Audi will use the X and Q respectively in naming their SUV like X1, X3, and X5. Japanese car meanwhile will like to give the same name for the car model like Accord, Camry, Corolla Altis, City, Civic and many others. While Volkswagen is one of the continental cars whom instead using numbering will use the wind as the car name like Passat, Scirocco, Polo, Tiguan and many other. While the car model can be named in different ways according to the car manufacturer, in today article we will look at how the car brand get their names.

One of the ways where the car brand get their names is from a historical figure or some significant for the car manufacturer. Cadillac was named after the French explorer Cadillac. Why was the Cadillac named after him? The city of Detroit was founded by Cadillac and once the Cadillac had decided to make the headquarters in Detroit they had named the car as Cadillac to honor the explorer who had founded the city. The Japanese auto manufacturer that had come back from a nearly bankrupt and that is famous for the sports car GT-R Nissan also was named after something significant for them. Nissan name comes from the stock exchange of Nis Sangyo while another Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi had come from the Mitsu” meaning “three” and “his” (which becomes “bishi” under rendaku) meaning “water caltrop” (also called “water chestnut”), and hence “rhombus”, which is reflected in the company’s logo. It is also translated as “three diamonds” hence this is meaning of the Mitsubishi 3 diamond logo. Hence for these 3-car manufacturers, their name had come from the founder of the city headquarter and also which related to the stock exchange markets.

Some car brand was named after a political ambition. Adolf Hitler may have some bad reputation in the world due to World War 2 and the Holocaust, but Hitler had a hand and was the inspiration behind the idea of making an affordable car for the German people emulating the United States during these times. Ferdinand Porsche of the best car engineer during these times was tasked with making this idea and reality and from these comes the name Volkswagen which means the people car.

Some car brand name is the translation from the other language. The famous Swedish car maker Volvo had their name from the Latin word volvore which means I roll. Mazda the increasingly popular Japanese car maker had their name from a different source. It is not a translation from other language but is the from the name of the Iran God of Light where it was named as Ahura Mazda and from these the name Mazda had come. Another interesting car brand name that comes from a translation of their language is the car brand Audi. Audi names come from the translation of the last name of their founder August Horch where Horch in the German language means to listen and the direct translation in Latin will be Audi.

Some car brand name was named after the places where they are founded. When comes to this BMW is the main example as BMW stands for Bavarian Motors Workshop as the company is founded in Munich, state of Bavaria capital in German. Bavarian people will always like announced themselves as Bavarian First, Germany second hence these car brands were named after the city.

The city of Bavaria in Munich is the place where BMW is born

We had seen the car brand named after something significant, borrowing and translation from other languages, political ambition of a leader, and place but most of the car brand name is named after the founder of the car brand. Toyota, Honda, Ford, Buick, Chrysler, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Bugatti, Maserati and many more were all named after the founder. Ford was named after the founder name Henry Ford, Rolls Royce was named after William Rolls and Patrick Royce, Toyota after Soichiro Toyoda and many other. The car brand that was founded after the founder names is the one that is the most in the automotive industries and with this the owner name is still intact when thought they had left the world. The truth of our local says that tiger will leave his stripe when it had died, man will leave their name and in the naming of the car brand after the owner name, the car brand and the founder is still been said and used.

Like the car model names which can come from the variety of sources, the car brand too their had their name depends on the places, share markets, translation from another language, and from the place they had been founded or related to the place founders. However, most of the car brand is been named after the founder of the brand. The car brand that had been named after the founder of the brand is most on the list. Some car brand like Volkswagen had been started as a political ambition to give all the German people an ability to own a car and now Volkswagen had become one of the biggest car group companies in Europe and third in the World after Toyota and General Motors.

Some car brand had been in downhill or hit by bankruptcy before they had revived again like Lamborghini, Buggati, Bentley, Rolls Royce, and many others. Some car brand still able to retain their name which is something that is remarkable given how competitive and volatile the car industry is. In simple term, the people who work in the car industries had been able to retain, revive and taking the car brand to next level and making their car brand name as one of the favorites or a dream car among the car lovers.
