The car in the contemporary time had been equipped with the latest car technologies when it comes to the interior layout, exterior design, engine, and its related component arrangement to boost the performance and for better fuel consumption, together with the advanced safety in a car. Suppose we compare the contemporary car with their predecessor they are a lot of refinement and enhancement in every aspect of the car production. The safety of the modern car is one of the utmost priorities given, and some of the safety has been refined that is become autonomous to mitigate the driver’s error. In the vast autonomous safety car technologies in modern time, they are one safety technology that will alert the driver to take a respite and ease out for a little while before continuing his journey. The technology is called DADS, which is an acronym for Drowsiness Alert Detection System.

These safety technologies were created after a published statistics related to the causes of the car accident, which highlighted that 20 percentage of car accidents had happened due to drivers fatigue. From these statistics, the car manufacturer had created these systems to alert the driver via an audible sound and instruction to ease off his driving duties and taking a rest. The honor for the first car manufacturer that introduced these systems is Volvo Car in 2007. Thenceforward almost all car manufacturer have produced their car with these detection systems. Together with the car manufacturer, they are some after-market alertness detection devices created by Bosch, Bluetooth drowsiness detection device by Vigo, etc.

How the DADS system detects driver fatigue or drowsiness? The fatigue while driving is not necessarily caused by long driving but can also be caused by the emotional strain that struck the drive. The driver can contemplate and ruminate about any incident or event that can unsettle him and simultaneously disrupt his focus while driving. The fatigue that can be incited due to tiredness of driving and the emotional strain from the driver must have some trigger for the detection system to perform. This trigger and starting point is the bedrock for creating the DADS together with published statistics that highlighted fatigue as one of the causes of accidents.

The trigger will be in the form of the steering movement and vehicle positioning. The car that had the alertness system will monitor the steering movements and vehicle positioning of the drivers. Suppose the system had detected any abnormalities in the steering movement and vehicle position. These abnormalities activated the DADS, which will prompt a  loud and audible noise with the TAKE A BREAK display in the car dashboard. The display and the audible noise will alert the driver from fatigue, and the driver can decide to maneuver his vehicle carefully or rest.

Some car manufacturers also deployed advanced systems like face and eye monitoring via an infrared camera positioned above the steering wheel or in the dashboard. This type of drowsiness system had been introduced in the DS automobile model. Meanwhile, in the Mercedez Benz, the detection system is linked to the onboard navigation system, informing the driver of the nearest shop or fuel station. Each car manufacturer had its distinctive way to alert the driver or advise the driver, but the basis for the DADS to be activated is the steering movement and vehicle positioning.

Another advanced feature that can be part of the DADS is the face recognition system. Face recognition will be an advanced improvement from the current system. If successfully implemented, the face recognition system will detect the driver’s eyelid movement, facial muscle, and other signs of drowsiness to activate the DADS. As mentioned before, each car manufacturer had its own distinctive way of implementing the DADS in its model; hence more advanced technologies can be expected for the successor of the modern car.

Although implemented for a good intention, the DADS sometimes and depending on the way car manufacturer had set up the DADS can annoy the drivers. Some car manufacturers had set up the DADS in their car model where it needs an interaction or action from the driver to reset the system. Once the DADS has been activated, it will  make an audible noise and if the driver does not stop his vehicle , the system can make louder noise that needs action from the driver to stop the noise. In most cases, the noise only can be stopped and reset back after the driver has stopped his vehicle or making any necessary action that is required according to the car manufacturers DADS.

The DADS safety is specially designed. Most safety will be activated to avoid the collision or attenuate if the car was caught in an accident. Afromentionedly, the DADS is a system that will bring back the driver to his focus or essentially an instruction to take rest to alleviate his fatigue simultaneously saving him from any contretemps or calamities. Unfortunately, these amazing safety systems are not available in most of the car and only in specific models or variants. These limited choices can be said as one of the drawbacks of DADS compared to other essential safety like airbags and ABS.

The DADS is one of the advancements in car safety to alert drivers of drowsiness or fatigue. When driving, the driver must be fully focused on their task as any emotional and mental disruption can be hazardous for the driver and their occupants. The DADS has been vital to reducing any car accident that can happen due to driver mental and physical tiredness. Hence, the DADS had been one the important car safety technologies introduced.
