DEBUNKING THE MYTH FOR CVT TRANSMISSION

CVT transmission deviates from the standard transmission. The CVT is in contrast to the traditional transmission as it does not have a physical gear ratio since it uses a pulley belt, has the least moving parts, does not able to handle high torque; therefore, it will not be available in the high-performance vehicle or car with a high cc turbo engine. Japanese car makers like Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and Honda are fervent proponents of these transmissions. The transmission can create some loathe as some dislike the ultra-smooth ride, and some fancy it as it has massive benefits too. The CVT transmission can make some difference of opinion among the transmission users, creating various myths about the transmission.

The supreme myth about CVT transmission is that it does not have performance. The CVT transmission does not have a physical gear ratio like, for instance, the Dual Clutch Transmission; however, it is gibberish to conclude that it does not provide excellent performance. Undoubtedly, the car which a CVT transmission does not offer the exhilarating performance that car lovers can gain from a non-CVT transmission. The nature of the CVT transmission, which does not have a physical gear ratio, eliminated the feels of gear changes from the oscillating RPM commonly observed in non-CVT transmission. Nevertheless, 2 of the best CVT transmission makers, Honda and Toyota, have incessantly improved and innovated their CVT transmission, providing excellent smooth performance. Both vehicles can give a smooth ride while providing adequate power for acceleration and overtaking.

One more point that can create a source of disagreement for CVT transmission is the use of the CVT transmission oil. Some car lovers prefer to use genuine transmission oil from the makers such as Honda and Toyota, while some car lovers will say that is it not detrimental to use a non-genuine CVT transmission oil. As a matter of fact, during the warranties period, it is advisable to use the genuine CVT transmission available in the service centre. The light argument whether to use the genuine or the aftermarkets will happen after the warranties period has ended. Car lovers can use the non–genuine CVT transmission provided it was approved for their respected CVT transmission model. It is advisable to buy from authorized dealers and workshops. Nonetheless, not every brand offers good protection; hence, pouring the best CVT transmission is advisable. One of the best aftermarket CVT transmissions comes from Castrol, Valvoline, Amsoil and Liqui Moly, and it is advisable to use these brands. Some car lovers have mentioned that the aftermarket CVT transmission provides a better driving experience than genuine CVT oil. If they are anxious about using the aftermarket CVT transmission, it is sensible to use the genuine CVT transmission.

Another common ground for contention is the CVT interval together with the replacement of the CVT filter. The CVT filter is a mandatory replacement for the Perodua user, while it is not compulsory for Honda and Toyota. During the period of the car warranties, which can be around 100,000km to 5 years, whichever comes first, the replacement of the CVT filter will be non-existent in the manual or the service centre scheduled maintenance. Again, these issues would happen after the warranties period had ended. Some workshops will recommend the interval to be at 20,000km, which deviates from the recommended interval from the car manufacturers. Honda recommended replacing the CVT transmission at 40,000km while Toyota on 80,000km. It is better to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation as they know best. Even in the aftermarket CVT transmission, which claimed that their CVT transmission could be sustained up to a long kilometre, there is a small precaution printed as “follow the vehicle manufacturer recommended interval”. Even though car lovers have used the aftermarket CVT transmission, it is still crucial to adhere to the vehicle manufacturers’ recommended intervals.

Apart from the transmission interval, they are also another point: whether to replace the transmission filter or not. Afromentionedly, the transmission filter will not be touched by the Honda and Toyota authorized service centre during the warranties period. It is not mentioned in their manual or scheduled service maintenance do’s and don’ts. Unlike the engine oil filter, the CVT filter has no combustion process. Besides, replacing the transmission filter is arduous, unlike the engine air filter, which is as simple as plug-and-play. The CVT transmission filter was built in such a way that the car makers do not want car lovers to replace the CVT filter regularly like the engine air filter. Some car workshops also will not change the transmission filter or advise the car lovers like the engine air filter and only will make the replacement if the car lovers request it. However, in a scenario where the transmission has been severely damaged, it is sensible to replace the CVT transmission filter. If the transmission is not damaged and performed impeccably, the CVT transmission filter is not mandatory to replace. Yet, it is advisable to replace the CVT transmission fluid before the recommended interval to ensure the performance of the CVT is intact.

The CVT transmission is not only a transmission that can create some hate group for those who had an aversion and create the proponent for it as they can notice massive benefits that CVT transmission had. It also can make some points of contention among car lovers. All these light skirmishes happened after the car warranties period ended. Some car lovers do not want to maintain their beloved vehicles with the service centre and will proceed to make the service maintenance with the trusted workshop outside the service centre. Even though car lovers are sending their vehicles to a non-authorized service centre, it is still sensible to adhere to the recommended interval for the car wear and tear part, especially the transmission. The car lovers can make the transmission on 20,000km contrary to the car manufacturer’s recommendation; however, it will be deemed too early to replace it. If the CVT transmission is not damaged, it is not recommended to change the transmission filter as it is a laborious process for the car workshop, and any mishap can severely damage the transmission. The transmission is built in such a way as the car manufacturers do not recommend replacing the CVT transmission filter, unlike other filters in the car, which is an easy and DIY job.
