Once women had been deemed nothing more than a seductive and just a slave for men. But women had openly challenged the man dominance and had broken the glass ceiling that had been imposed on them. Now we can see women as a leader of a country, as CEO of a reputable organization, and many other achievements. Some of the great achievement is like Indira Gandhi who had become the first and the only Prime Minister for India the biggest democratic country in the world, Golda Meir the Iron Lady from Israel during the tough period of terrorist attack, Margaret Thatcher is still the longest serving Prime Minister for the UK and many more. In the automobile industry that is dominated by men, they are many women who had become famous and here is some of them.

Charlotte Bridgwood

Ever wonder who invented the automatic windscreen wipers, it is none other than Charlotte Bridgwood an American vaudeville performer. She is also the President of a small manufacturing company in New York and she had invented many other things however the most influential of all is the automatic windscreen wipers. However, the sad part of the stories is even though she had been credited with the invention, but she only received a little credit and a small wealth from it.

Danica Patrick

Professional racing is a field that is dominated by male however if they ever a female who had been successful in this field, it is Danica Patrick. She is the most successful women in the history of American open-wheel racing and to establish her success in this field her win in 2008 Indy Japan is the only success by women in IndyCar series. She officially retired from these field in 2008 after competing in 2018 Daytona 500 and 2018 Indianapolis 500.

 Michelle Christensen

Another field where it is dominated by a male is the exterior design of supercar. Although they are some women in the department Michelle Christensen is the one who had been famous in this department as she had become the first female exterior designer for Acura. She also the lead designer in the production of the second generation of Honda NSX. Due to their achievement in this, she had received the Women on Top award from Marie Clarie magazine.

Florence Lawrence

Another simple and compulsory device that is available in the car is turn signal and the inventor of this is Florence Lawrence. What makes her invention amazing is that she is not an engineer or inventor but in fact a Canadian American stage actor and film actress. What she had is a great passion in the automobile and this how she invented the turn signal. The first predecessor for the signal turn is Florence invention of auto signaling arm. However, since she did not patent it, she did not receive any credit and wealth from it.

Mary Barra

General Motors is the multinational automotive related corporation that produces a car like Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC. The CEO of this corporation is Mary Barra and she is the first female CEO for an automotive corporation.  She is the one who is responsible for the creation of Chevy Bolt EV, beating Tesla motor in becoming the first electric car in the world.

Juliane Blasi and Nadya Arnaout

In the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, BMW Motors had launched their new model Z4 with a retractable hardtop. Once the reporters, car writers and others had complemented the car as sportier, more dynamic, more aggressive and more masculine, the BMW director had introduced the designer and it is a female. It is Julianne Blasi the exterior designer and Nadya Arnaout the interior designer. Like Michelle Christensen, both of this female had involved in the design of a supercar proving that the automobile industry is not a male-dominated industry anymore.

Bertha Benz

Bertha Benz is the wife of the founder of Mercedez Benz, Karl Benz. Although Karl Benz was the inventor Bertha Benz is the one who is responsible for generating the sales for Benz. How she had done it? She had driven the Benz Model 3 from Mannheim to Pforzheim that had the length of 194 km, the first ever long haul drive for a car and on the way she had gained good publicity for this and this had made Model 3 become a great financial success giving great confidence for Karl Benz. Along the way she also had solved many problems that are associated with the car such as purchasing ligroin, the petroleum solvent needed to run the car at Wiesloch at the city pharmacy  and making Wiesloch as the first fuel station in the world, an evaporative cooling system to cool down the engine , making an additional gear for uphill as she had difficulties to drove the car uphill and most importantly she had become the pioneer of the test drive before purchasing any vehicle which had become a standard practice in the industry today. When Bertha Benz passed away, Karl Benz wrote a memoir saying that “Only one person remained with me in the small ship of life when it seemed destined to sink. That was my wife. Bravely and resolutely she set the new sails of hope”. The long drive haul route that had taken by her had been declared as the Martha Benz Memorial Lane. Fair enough to say that she is the mastermind behind the rise of Mercedez Benz as the top automobile brand in the world today.

In the past, women had been given many glass ceilings for them in order to limit their activities. But once the glass ceiling had been broken for women by the women, they had achieved many success and achievement in other filed and the automotive is one of them. Once the automotive industry is a male-dominated field but it is no more as they are more women in the future and in the present that will make an impact in this industry.
